Electric Curtain Tracks

Understanding the Electric Curtain Track System - Delve Deep into How Electric Curtain Tracks Work

Electric curtain tracks have moved well beyond the territory of luxury hotels and high-end showrooms. Over the past few years, they have become a genuinely practical upgrade for UK homes — driven by smarter motors, plug-in power options, and prices that no longer require a second mortgage. Whether you are drawn to the convenience of opening your curtains from bed, the energy-saving benefits of scheduled automation, or simply the satisfaction of a perfectly silent glide every time, the modern electric curtain track system delivers on all of it.

This guide covers everything you need to make a confident decision — from how the mechanics actually work, to which motorised curtain track suits your window, your budget, and your home. If you want to skip straight to the products, visit our full electric curtain track range. Otherwise, read on.

How Electric Curtain Tracks Work

A motorised curtain track is not complicated, but understanding its components helps you make the right choice. Every system has four main parts working together:

  • The track rail. This is the aluminium extrusion that mounts to your wall or ceiling. It is precision-engineered to allow the gliders to run smoothly along its full length, with minimal friction.
  • The motor. A compact electric motor sits inside or at one end of the track and drives a continuous belt or cord system. On Silent Gliss tracks, this belt is completely internal — there is nothing visible hanging at the sides.
  • The gliders. Curtains hang from plastic gliders that clip onto the belt inside the track. When the motor moves the belt, every glider moves in perfect unison. This is what gives electric tracks their characteristic smooth, even travel.
  • The control unit. This receives signals from your chosen input — a wall switch, handheld remote, app, or voice command — and instructs the motor to open, close, or stop. On the Silent Gliss range, control units are wireless and communicate via radio frequency.

The result is a curtain that opens and closes in a single fluid motion, without bunching, sagging, or the inevitable snag you get when pulling a manual track by hand. For a deeper look at the mechanics, see our article on how electric curtain tracks work.

Types of Electric Curtain Track

We sell three Silent Gliss systems, each designed for a different kind of installation.

Silent Gliss Autoglide 5100 — Best for Most Homes

The Silent Gliss Autoglide 5100 is the track we recommend to the majority of our customers. It is a plug-in system — no electrician required. It handles tracks up to 6 metres long and carries curtains weighing up to 25kg on a straight run (15kg if bent for a bay window). It bends to a minimum radius of 250mm, making it the system of choice for bay window electric curtain tracks.

The 5100 comes in four variants — B (wall button), R (remote), T (timer), and TC (timer + remote). It is compatible with wave curtain headers, carries a 5-year warranty, and is currently available at 35% off the Silent Gliss RRP.

Silent Gliss 5600 — Commercial Grade, Unlimited Length

The Silent Gliss 5600 is a mains-hardwired system for large installations. It requires a qualified electrician but can run to 25 metres, support curtains up to 65kg, and take any number of bends. Available at 20% off RRP with a 5-year warranty.

Silent Gliss Metropole — The Electric Curtain Pole

The Silent Gliss Metropole is a decorative 50mm curtain pole — designed to be seen. It comes in 9 finishes and 9 finial styles. The electric version uses the same 5100 motor, so it is plug-in with no electrician needed. One important limitation: the electric Metropole cannot be bent. Available at 30% off RRP.

Electric Curtain Track vs Manual — Key Differences

The practical advantages of an electric curtain rail over a manual one are:

  • No wear on the fabric. A motor-driven track moves the curtain evenly with no hand contact required.
  • Consistent stack position. Every time the curtain opens or closes, it stacks in exactly the same position.
  • Accessibility. For tall windows or anyone with limited mobility, eliminating the need to physically reach for the curtain is a genuine quality-of-life improvement.
  • Automation. Schedules and smart home integration mean your curtains can respond to sunrise, sunset, or any event you configure.

When is manual the better choice? If you have a short, lightweight window that you rarely open, an inexpensive manual track will serve you perfectly well. Read more in our article on the advantages of electric curtains.

Choosing the Right Electric Curtain Track

How long is your track?

If longer than 6 metres, you need the 5600, which handles up to 25 metres.

How heavy are your curtains?

Medium-weight lined curtains on a 4m track typically weigh 10–15kg. If at or above the 5100's 25kg limit (or 15kg if bent), the 5600 is the safer choice.

Do you have a bay window?

The 5100 and 5600 both bend — the electric Metropole does not. See our bay window guide.

Is a mains socket accessible?

The 5100 and Metropole plug into a standard socket. The 5600 connects to a fused spur.

Does the track need to be decorative?

If yes, the Metropole is your only electric option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an electrician?

Not for the 5100 or Metropole — both are plug-in. The 5600 requires hardwiring by a qualified electrician.

Can electric curtain tracks work with my existing curtains?

In most cases, yes. The key question is weight. Get in touch if unsure.

How quiet are electric curtain tracks?

Silent Gliss systems are genuinely quiet. The belt-driven mechanism produces a low, smooth hum.

What happens if the power goes out?

You can move the curtains manually. The 5100's Touch & Go feature means a gentle pull will move the curtain by hand.

Can I control an electric curtain track with Alexa or Google Home?

The 5600 supports smart home integration via the Move 4.0 Server. The 5100 T and TC have built-in timers but don't natively connect to smart hubs. See our control options guide.

How long do electric curtain tracks last?

All Silent Gliss tracks carry a 5-year warranty and motors are rated for millions of cycles.
